It’s time I had a quiet word with the universe about this Virtual Cassette Library lark of mine. Lately it’s been drifting off like a helium balloon made of old mixtape innards, floating away from the original bonfire of my intentions. I need to yank it back by its magnetic tape tail before it disappears into a cloud of forgotten B-sides.
I’ve just been bathing in the first episode of The Signal by Wall of Ambient — Harry Towell and James Osland swimming through the ambient oceans like two elegant seahorses in velvet capes. Go and drink it in on Substack. And while you’re there, follow me like a loyal moth to my flickering neon sign.
Anyway, Harry said something that pinged my third eye: concept is the beating heart of an album. And I suddenly realised that even though I pluck these tracks from their original conceptual wombs, my shows are actually stitched together with their own secret concepts. Lately I’ve been chattering between tracks like a magpie on a telephone wire and the concept has been leaking out like cheese from a toasted sandwich.
So what’s the concept, you ask, while adjusting your imaginary pipe?
Well, I’ve spent my entire working life lurking on and around stages like a quiet caretaker with glitter under his nails. I see each episode as a colossal rotating stage — a great mechanical blooming lotus. The audience only ever glimpses a sliver of it at a time. Every artist is allotted the exact time it takes them to perform their piece. Then they rotate out of view like a peacock into fog, and the next act glides in. The stage spins at whatever speed the track demands — slow and syrupy or frantic and glittering.
I still want to whisper the names of the artists, the albums and the labels, so I’ll do that before each set — or “side,” as we cassette alchemists call them. Six little incantations per side, plus a general mist of what mood to expect.
Now… shall we let the stage begin to turn?
So episode 311 is a weathered, slightly spectral ambient journey through closing dive bars, overlapping canopies, and monuments that have already begun to kneel.
Overall mood: Contemplative, analog, and quietly dilapidated — full of forgotten light, phase transitions, and sockets still whispering in the dark. Perfect for late listening, empty stages, or sitting with the ivy while it finishes the sentence.
Side A lets shadows clock off at the edge of the universe, waves from a missed railway cutting, shares a stereo canopy, opens a December jar six months late, weathers the ivy through human architecture, and climbs dilapidated monuments only to accept itself.

I start with an apology to the artist EBlo who in the last episode I mixed up with an artist of the same name. EBlo is in fact based in Malmö, Sweden and not the US. Also a shout out to the wonderful aeon who not only is one of my only subscribers but also left a comment on a show a while back and asked me to do an episode of his amazing CAMP radio monthly series Fragments. Opening this episode with a piece from the new compilation album Gemstones VII out on Cyclical Dreams that Record label focused on Berlin School, Ambient, Soundscape, Space Music, Drone, and electronic music. On this episode you’ll hear Calgary, Alberta based Monroeville Music Center with a lovely nostalgic crackling piece from 2015 titled Parting Regrets from the name your price album Cave & Castle. Formerly available on cassette via Illuminated Paths.
Then Coventry, UK based artist Rich Johnson aka Visionary Lines sent me his latest haunted single The People’s City.
This will be followed by another UK based artist LoveKrafty and the also nostalgic track Sunflowers from the 2020 release Rainbow Drifter.
Then if I say Preston you’ll probably say Polypores. If you know Polypores then you’d probably not recognise this as being the same artist. I’ve chosen the track Foxes taken from his latest release Wildlife. It’s availabe on cassette through the Aural Canyon label.
After that we head to Italy and an artist who ended yesterdays episode Far away Nebraska with the drifting drone tones of a track titled It’s been a while since I’ve been here from the album Halfway from nowhere which is out on Seil Records sub-label Kordel Records.
Closing Side A is Tehran based Iranian artist Nahal Kavand and the lovely floating drones of the track Confusion from the album Echoes of a Fading Existence which is out on Lᴏɴᴛᴀɴᴏ Series which is the sub-label of rohs! records.

Welcome back, sonic travellers. Six tracks down. Six still waiting.
You’ll hear another artist I played yesterday. Italian artist Gino Fioravanti (Aglaia) with the longest entry in todays episode at 13:50 titled Unicorn from their latest release Altitudes which is out on legenday Projekt Records.
After that we’ll head to my present city of resedence Stockholm and an older one from 2012 by Martin Herterich’s alter ego Sand Circles and the final track from his album Motor City, it’s also the shortest piece of the episode at 1:10 titled Summer Echoes II.
Then we find ourselves in Southsea, UK based artist swimming lesson. Now this is a super duper exclusive from a collective of absolutly wonderful souls that I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for a few years now. They’ve gotten together to form The Synthesis Co-Operative and the first release is out on the 4th of September and will be available on cassette, Minidisc and digital and will be accompanied with a 40 page zine. Preorders from 14th August. This swimming lesson track, is stunning, and is called Transistor Revolution. Other names on this first release which will go by the name The Synthesis Co-Op Volume One will include The Earl of Dean, Legacy Systems, HDRF, Scholars of the Peak, theMLFs, Visionary Lines, Warmfield and more.
Near the end we’re joined by another Projekt Records release by Kyiv, Ukraine artist Bohdan Stupak and the moving track horizon from the equally moving album a place in memories.
Finally, Paris, France based artist Philippe Deschamps together with Nathaniel James Goldblatt aka The Goodnight Project and the drifting track Liquid Illusions from the four track EP Maps of an Invisible World.
But first, a wonderfully weird track by Mensa Group International titled Southern Mauristemo Islands from the 2012 Album Split LP which is split with luxury elite and was released on the Ailanthus Recordings label.

After that, a piece from Boards of Canada’s Inferno: the quietly devastating “Memory Death”, out on Warp Records of course.
Then a collaboration between Tomotsugu Nakamura and David Cordero: the floating “Ukiyo” (floating world) from the album Aware 哀れ which in Japanese translates as pity or sorrow. Thats out on the wonderful Home Normal label.
Closing Side A is Venezuelan artist Angelo Sanellix together with Mexican producer Justin Ortiz (as SpoonBeats), offering liminal ambience in “long time ago” from the album Distant Particles, released on the prolific Stockholm label Valley View Records.

Finishing us off is the pumping beats of Ali O’May and Frazer Brown aka Dohnavùr and their banger “Powerless” from their recently released “We Owe Each Other Everything” album out on, yes, Castles In Space.

I’ve gone back to doing more podcast style episodes but I’ll do all the talking now in the intro as I’ve put a lot of love into making seamless segued mixes. There is just one break halfway through the episode to give the “virtual cassette” title a meaning. This episode is inspired by the key of A# or Bb minor and based on the retro library charm of the track “Cool Air” by UK artist Jim Jupp under his “Belbury Poly” alias from the 4 track EP “Farmer’s Angle”.
Also on this episode you’ll be aurally pleasured by an artists I know little about except that they’ve worked with my sister of the airwaves Kate Bosworth and have released most of their work on the wonderful Adventurous Music label this track titled “Das Zeitfenster” (the time window
) is from not so much an album but a book by Corina Retzlaff with artwork by Francis Théberge titled “Die Verschiebung der Zeit” (The shifting of time).
Then friend of us all Gavin Brick, aka, The Metamorph gives us his sparkling track “Telos” from his latest masterpiece album “From Cobalt to Aquamarine”.
Followed by the episode inspired Belbury Poly piece “Cool Air”.
After that, keeping it in the region with Frazer Brown and Alasdair O’May aka Dohnavùr with their track “Predicaments” from the collaboration album “Dohnavùr//Kl(aüs)” out on Castles in Space.
Ending the A side is the rather worldly piece titled “Rosewood and Olive” by Jeff Gburek + Eryk Nowacki from the album “Small Fires” out on the Mahorka label. A superb release.
Starting off Side B in Berlin school style with Leeds based Tim Stebbing and the track “The Adventure” taken from the “CYCLICAL MAGAZINE 21” EP out on my wonderful friends at Cyclical Dreams.
Followed by a character that’s very active on the scene Michael Evill aka Shambolic and here as The Music Liberation Front Sweden with the wonderfully hopeful track titled “Anyone Can Play The Flugelhorn Outside My Window” from his “Lost Hope Society” album released on Subexotic Records.
Then a piece by myself titled “Visit Impressing Backup” which is where the cover art for this piece is. Created by my friend Ylva Magnusson. It’s from the album “”TVCL 10”.
After that Daniel Avramescu together with Feast of Starlight. A mysterious cloud hovers over all the artists that appear on the label The Dream Journal Institute. All of which seem to be fictional (correct me if I’m wrong) this piece is titled “The Inheritor” and is from the release “The Cosmic Mystery Play”
Then the penultimate piece for today comes in the form of a Castles in Space sister label Lunar Module release from Phexioenesystems and their stunning floating piece titled “Hypothetical Colours” from the album “Patterns in Condensate”
Finishing us off is an artist that is the wonderful Portsmouth finest, Mr. Simon Heartfield and the uplifting track “Across The Snow” from his release “Stella Rossa”.
But first, to set the vibe is Faroese-Icelandic Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen collectively known as Kiasmos and the piano injected Idm track “Dazed” from their album “II” out on Erased Tapes.

Stoke On Trents own Phil Heeks is back with his unmistakeable retro sci-fi adventures as The British Stereo Collective in “Bloodrush” from his latest release “ProtoSynthesis”.
Then the shortest piece for today comes from a rework of a Raúl Cantizano & David Cordero piece by Japanese artist, Haruhisa Tanaka with “Mi centro vine a encontrar” ‘I came to find my center.’ From the album ‘Even if the morning comes’. Aunque llegue la mañana · Refracted.
Ending the A side is composer and founder of Hylé Tapes, Richard Francés with some nice intimate sound diary with deep bass drones in the track “14 Octobre 2023 II” from the album “Afterwork II (Octobre 2023)”
Starting off Side B with some distorted drone blisters is the second choice from the Connection: sculpting silence compilation on Richard Francés Hylé Tapes label. This one from Berlin based, French artist, kritzkom titled “Texture of Cold”.
St. Cloud, Florida based Olio Flux brightens the view in “It’s All About Control (Instrumental)” from the NYP release “Selected Frequencies”.
Channel friend, Estonian artist, Paul Beaudoin soothes us with the micro sounds of “10th Cultivation” from his album “spores.dat” out on Audiobulb.
The third choice from the Connection: sculpting silence compilation comes in the form of cassette bliss “Shabondama” by Japans own Hiro Nakamura, aka, Tokyo Bedroom Orchestra
Then the penultimate piece for today comes in the form of the french ambient composer and improviser Tom Leclerc and a rather hopeful piece “the pebbles speak” the final choice from the Connection: sculpting silence compilation.
Finishing us off is the ever drifting wash of ´small waves’ Petites vagues from French Canadian artist Mathieu Lamontagne aka Arbee from his latest from the Chitra Records sub label Ambient Cat, Titled En vain.

Then Canadian artist Grant Gard, who records as landtitles with the clarinet infused track “staring at the clouds” from the album “geographic beings, phosphorus mountains” out on whitelabrecs.
After that Tucson, Arizona based Kirk Markarian aka Neuro… No Neuro with the ambient swelling track “You Wasted Your Time” from the album “MemLoss” out on the Sheffield based Audiobulb label.
Then from the latest Cyclical Dreams label release comes the wonderfully stereo panned piece “The Light That Returns” by Adam Filip from the album “The Returning Circle”.
Ending the A side is Michael Plaster aka yttriphie with the Boards of Canada tinged “A Narrow Field of View” from the album “Solipsis” out on Projekt Records.
Starting off Side B is the inspiration for this episode and one of those bands that are instantly recognisable and just a good mood pill in general. They are of course Polly Hulse and Jez Butler collectively known as The Twelve Hour Foundation. With a track from their latest release “Expanded & Repurposed” with the track “Habitat 67” featuring the brilliant Alan Gubby of Buried Treasure / Revbjelde fame adding vibraphone to this classic.
This flows into Brutalist architecture inspired “Rozzol Melara [Triest]” by Fredy Engel aka MiDi BiTCH from another Cyclical Dreams release titled “Habitat”.
Then the penultimate piece for today comes in the form of another favourite artist from the past few years Cate Francesca Brooks and the hypnotic piece “Secure Environments Ltd” from the album “For Your Security”.
And finishing us off is the 18 minute 25 second piece “Untitled 1 [a,b,c,d,e]” by The Projectionist from the rather special label The Dream Journal Institute whose artists don’t seem to actually exist yet they are not AI. This track would have ended up on an episode of Expansive Waves but I’m not doing them any more as they just aren’t worth it. Too much time equals too few listeners.
But setting the vibe for all of this is Portsmouth based legend Keith Seatman with his track “A Posh Hat and Timepiece” from the album “Counting To Ten Then Back Again” out on Castles In Space.

Side B gives us inner and out space exploration from Oregon based Modular Synth artist Bart Hawkins.
A meditative soundscape from Melbourne based friend Willebrant who’s sneaked into the mix twice.
Then after the inspired Paul Beaudoin track we drift into a legend of the scene and one I’ve never been able to make contact with. Lee Anthony Norris, here as one of his many alter egos Moss Garden It’s available on lots of places including Fantasy Enhancing, Neotantra and NATURE BLISS.
Penultimately from Trittau, Germany is Christian Fiesel with a release on Cyclical Dreams.
Ending the show is the drone collaboration of Sunil Kumar Sharma aka Suseti and Karl Willebrant again with a Willebrant self release from last year.
But Starting us off Rotterdam based artist Ard Bit is searching for a connection beyond the surface with the track “Fanal Magic” from the album “Juxtaposed”. Out on the Dutch Drunarium sub label Derde. Enjoy…

A textured, slightly restless ambient and experimental journey through protected light, subway chaos, and quiet figures still gathering.
Side A opens in remixed German-Czech-Spanish frequencies and Bristol trio gravity, then moves through Chester grandmother light, Berlin bouncing patterns, whimsical DNA cheesecake, and limbs of sticks under Machen’s bridge. Side B settles into Salt LX thoughts carried by wind, absolute chaos circuits, dark-ambient lounge noise, simple guitar drones that wait for yes, submerged porcelain systems, and a Quiet Figures remix that percolates the filter open.
Overall mood: Contemplative, slightly dark, and richly layered — full of analogue edges, exclusive whispers, and slow openings. Perfect for late listening, deep immersion, or sitting with what keeps moving while the figures remain.
