Now. Each of these episodes is a two-part outing, just like the classic cassette. Unlike mixtapes or playlists, these two sides are curated as proper DJ sets, six tracks segued into one continuous mix, stitched together so carefully you can barely see the thread. Unless you look.

Now imagine each episode as a colossal rotating stage — a great mechanical blooming lotus. You, the audience only ever glimpse a sliver of it at a time. Every artist is allotted the exact time it takes them to perform their piece. Then they rotate out of view, and the next act glides in. The stage spins at whatever speed the track demands.
The names of the artists and labels I’ll mention before each set — or “side,” as the cassette alchemists call them. Six little incantations per set, plus a general mist of what mood to expect.

Side A gathers moss on a lotus that has not officially opened, parks Sol in the cat’s window, breaks Kerala dawn against industrial dusk, coils organisms above the weather, circumnavigates on a borrowed lighthouse, and smears 1982 until the hair still looks like a forecast. Side B lives in the umbra that remembers what cast it, opens water with no coastline drawn on it, retires speech for the evening, keeps a 2012 hold tone wearing pearls, jams Golden Acres until the punchline clocks out, and packs IDM for a journey only a shadow completes.

Right then, my glittering cassette moths…
It’s time I had a quiet word with the universe about this Virtual Cassette Library lark of mine. Lately it’s been drifting off like a helium balloon made of old mixtape innards, floating away from the original bonfire of my intentions. I need to yank it back by its magnetic tape tail before it disappears into a cloud of forgotten B-sides.
I’ve just been bathing in the first episode of The Signal by Wall of Ambient — Harry Towell and James Osland swimming through the ambient oceans like two elegant seahorses in velvet capes. Go and drink it in on Substack. And while you’re there, follow me like a loyal moth to my flickering neon sign.
Anyway, Harry said something that pinged my third eye: concept is the beating heart of an album. And I suddenly realised that even though I pluck these tracks from their original conceptual wombs, my shows are actually stitched together with their own secret concepts. Lately I’ve been chattering between tracks like a magpie on a telephone wire and the concept has been leaking out like cheese from a toasted sandwich.
So what’s the concept, you ask, while adjusting your imaginary pipe?
Well, I’ve spent my entire working life lurking on and around stages like a quiet caretaker with glitter under his nails. I see each episode as a colossal rotating stage — a great mechanical blooming lotus. The audience only ever glimpses a sliver of it at a time. Every artist is allotted the exact time it takes them to perform their piece. Then they rotate out of view like a peacock into fog, and the next act glides in. The stage spins at whatever speed the track demands — slow and syrupy or frantic and glittering.
I still want to whisper the names of the artists, the albums and the labels, so I’ll do that before each set — or “side,” as we cassette alchemists call them. Six little incantations per side, plus a general mist of what mood to expect.
Now… shall we let the stage begin to turn?
So episode 311 is a weathered, slightly spectral ambient journey through closing dive bars, overlapping canopies, and monuments that have already begun to kneel.
Overall mood: Contemplative, analog, and quietly dilapidated — full of forgotten light, phase transitions, and sockets still whispering in the dark. Perfect for late listening, empty stages, or sitting with the ivy while it finishes the sentence.
Side A lets shadows clock off at the edge of the universe, waves from a missed railway cutting, shares a stereo canopy, opens a December jar six months late, weathers the ivy through human architecture, and climbs dilapidated monuments only to accept itself.

A textured, slightly nocturnal ambient journey through quiet intensity, natural shifts, and digital calm.
Side A moves from prowling glass and sea changes into moonlight grass, barrel flowers, reduced beats, and deep geological time. Side B drifts through wormeries, rushing ascent, liquid amber circles, grid edges, digital meditation, and ends on an old road.
Overall mood: Contemplative, atmospheric, and gently dynamic — blending organic warmth with subtle tension and quiet modern stillness. Perfect for late-evening listening, deep focus, or peaceful immersion.

Side A
On this episode you’ll hear the sprawling and inventive side-project of Suncastle’s George Evans and Kristofer Thomas aka Paris Texas who together call themselves Glass Roots. Yes it’s an older release from 2020 but as it’s on Triplicate records it means that it’s Name Your Price on Bandcamp. Which suits my unimployed world. Anyway the track is a stomping Idm piece titled “Panther Loud” from the album “The Idiot”. Go grab it for as little as you can.
Then a dose of slapped bass in a wonderful track titled “Sea Change” by friend of the shows Emily Sobool, aka Socool who has teamed up with Paul Griffin and released a collection of tunes under the name “Dreams & Riddles”
Next, another team up with Elizabeth Joan Kelly aka Orca and David Rodriguez aka Attack! with a highly original piece titled “Grass In The Moonlight” which is a great name so I think I’ll title this episode after it. It’s from a release out on the Mortality Tables label called, yes “Grass In The Moonlight”.
This will be followed by, would you believe it?, another duo in the form of Ali O’May and Frazer Brown as Dohnavùr and a captivating synth adventure titled “Flowers In The Barrel” from their latest release “We Owe Each Other Everything” which you can get on vinyl from that Castles In Space that’s in everyones library.
After that, not a another duo, o no, a Leeds based act of unknown numbers. Active between 1993-1994 called Adel Music Club. You’ll be treated to some sweet drum breaks and bongos or highly tuned congas in the track titled “Break Beats Nothing” from the release called “Golden Acres” out on the channel supporting FRBH Recordings.
Closing Side A is of course another duo. A name all of you know and are probably a bit tired of after this release. It is of course Boards of Canada with the wonderfully wobbly track “Deep Time” from their latest gem “Inferno”. That’s on vinyl in my collection and is available through Warp Records.

Welcome back, sonic travellers. Six tracks down. Six still waiting.
You’ll hear a founder of Triplicate Records, Mr. Michael Southard aka Time Rival and an exclusive, I dare say, from his Bandcamp subscription library titled “Rush Up” from the album “stay safe out there“ which has an official release on the 2nd of October.
Then, speaking of Triplicate Records and their amazing back catalogue I’m playing Belial Pelegrim and an enchanting track titled “Circle of Liquid Ambers”. from the 2020 album “Torus”.
Next. No episode of TVCL would be complete without a dose of modular tweakings. We head to another channel supporting label Paris based Hylé Tapes and the artist Aurel Val with the track “Grid’s End” from the album “Mods-1”. Go grab one of the 7 remaining cassettes on Hylé Tapes.
Near the end we travel to Genoa, Italy with a downtempo summer vibe piece by artist Brioskj titled “Digital Meditation” from the EP The Persuaders! And that’s another Name Your Price release from Finlands finest label: Kahvi Collective.
And finally, a real exclusive track from a true friend of the show. A gentleman fond of words and espicially dialects. Mr. Graham Thorpe who of course is better know as gribbles at least for now. Keep an eye out for upcoming stuff in his own name. Anyway I’m playing a Lemon Jelly flavoured track titled “Owd Roa (Part)” from an upcoming release titled “Agatewards” dropping on boutique label Yellowbelly Records on the 4th of September. Keep an eye out for that.

Anyway, this is an amazing piece of audio art by Imogen Haley Baker who calls herself Enofa, and a rather haunted track titled “The Wormery” from an album called “Small Modernist House in Woodland Setting” which was sent to me by the wonderful Dan Seville, who runs the equally wonderful Subexotic Records. That will be released on double LP black vinyl from the 14th of August. According to the blurb for this release, Imogen made close to a hundred different pieces of music. A lot of htem, she says, will probably stay on her hard drive for decades. Well if you’re listening Imogen, yoou could enter one in for my quiet figures compilation.

Then Sarnia, Ontario based “EKT” with a groovy synth outing in the piece “Pioneer Plaque” from a 32 track album called “Pura Vida” A fascinating release where almost all the tracks have super psychedelic videos. The album is also free to anyone who sends a screenshot or photo proof of them deleting Spotify and/or any social media app.
The penultimate track of the first side of the virtual cassette is by Eric Wetherell and the theme from the 1975 HTV series “Sky”. The shortest track of the episode at just 47 seconds. Suggestive and eerie. From the well sold out Album “Sky” on the Buried Treasure label.
Finishing off the first half, we go one year earlier with a track by Milan based Barigozzi Group and a bouncing library jazz track complete with cowbell from 1974 titled “Violet Lips” from the album Woman’s Colours where all the track names are a specific colour combined with a different part of the body.
But first, to set the vibe is the outstanding Jim Jupp aka Belbury Poly and the psychedelic organ infused track “Scarlet Ceremony” from his album “The Owl’s Map” which was originally released back in 2006 on the Ghost Box label.

You’ll hear Lee Spreadbury better known as Gurulee and his wonderfully nostalgic prog-fusion jazz waltz infected track “Flo” from the EP “Into the Light” which is recorded at ATA Studios.
Followed by a group of artists that have probably sneaked their way into this episode in a few ways. Here is Leeds based, Outer Worlds Jazz Ensemble, with the downtempo, sexy, flute injected, library piece titled “Low Orbit” from the album “The Kármán Line” which is out on ATA Records.
After that Nitzan Dana also known as Islands On Tape with a downtempo, hypnotic, cinematic and rimshot heavy piece “Dust Conspiracy” from the EP of the same name. Dropping October 16th on Batov Records.
Then the penultimate track for today comes in the form of the psychedelic jazz-funk grooves of Italys Atabasca and the track “Hell Dorado”. Grab one of the last vinyls of the self titled album on Killer Grooves Records.
Finishing us off is the label that is also a band, Leeds based, “ATA Records” with a party lifter complete with handclaps and bongos in the track, “The Galata Extraction” from the must have album “The Library Archive Vol. 4”

I’ve gone back to doing more podcast style episodes but I’ll do all the talking now in the intro as I’ve put a lot of love into making seamless segued mixes. There is just one break halfway through the episode to give the “virtual cassette” title a meaning. ) is from not so much an album but a book by Corina Retzlaff with artwork by Francis Théberge titled “Die Verschiebung der Zeit” (The shifting of time).
Then friend of us all Gavin Brick, aka, The Metamorph gives us his sparkling track “Telos” from his latest masterpiece album “From Cobalt to Aquamarine”.
Followed by the episode inspired Belbury Poly piece “Cool Air”.
After that, keeping it in the region with Frazer Brown and Alasdair O’May aka Dohnavùr with their track “Predicaments” from the collaboration album “Dohnavùr//Kl(aüs)” out on Castles in Space.

Then a piece by myself titled “Visit Impressing Backup” which is where the cover art for this piece is. Created by my friend Ylva Magnusson. It’s from the album “”TVCL 10”.
After that Daniel Avramescu together with Feast of Starlight. A mysterious cloud hovers over all the artists that appear on the label The Dream Journal Institute. All of which seem to be fictional (correct me if I’m wrong) this piece is titled “The Inheritor” and is from the release “The Cosmic Mystery Play”

An artists that has gone under the radar for years is the UK based Mark Ellery Griffiths. If you’re into vintage synths then dive into his vast name your price catalogue on Bandcamp. Mark gives us some brutalist electronica.
Another regular of the episodes is Rick Jones aka DARK FIDELITY HIFI with Orb flavoured Idm out on his sight and sound label. Also London based Rodrigo Passannantis’ latest I can’t seem to get enough of those soaring synth lines lately. From the Cyclical Dreams label.
Ivo Petrovs Mahorka label is almost always included. This time with quirky dub vibes from Mülheim, Germany based Record Of Tides.
The B side opens with the 27 minute track showing us what the Nord Modular G1 can do by Switzerland based Rupert Lally. This track would have made it onto an Expansive Waves episode but I’ve decided to discontinue those due to lack of motivation.

EXPANSIVE WAVES — EPISODE 24
Good evening, or morning, or whatever fragment of time you’ve found yourself in. This is Expansive Waves, episode twenty-four. I’m Trevor—your host, your guide, your occasional sonic conspirator.
This programme is not for the hurried. Eight pieces, each longer than 12 minutes—most stretching far beyond that—each more patient than the last. If you’re expecting choruses, drops, or anything resembling urgency, you may want to try another channel.

Work Money Death and “Pain Becomes Prayer And Prayer Becomes A Song,” from the album A Portal To Here, released by ATA Records on the 13th of Feb. 2026.
Picture yourself in a dimly lit room at dusk, harp strings catching the last amber light, a low horn murmuring like wind through an ancient chapel, tamborine arriving soft and deliberate as distant rain on stone — grief transforming, layer by layer, into something luminous and unnameable.
A profound meditation where sorrow unfolds into reverence, the ensemble channeling spiritual jazz lineages with tender, unhurried grace.
That was Work Money Death — “Pain Becomes Prayer And Prayer Becomes A Song.”
Next, we drift into Dubberrookie with “Real Axing,” drawn from the album Pieces for Piano A NYP self release from the 22nd of Feb. 2026
Imagine bare wooden floors under moonlight, a single piano in the center of an empty warehouse, keys struck with such restraint that each note lingers like fog rolling across water, electronic undertows pulling gently at the edges of perception.
A delicate, wobbly exploration that turns piano resonance into something quietly electronic and deeply introspective.
That was Dubberrookie — “Real Axing.”
Now, Fabio Keiner & Jack Hertz present “Mindless,” the title track from their album Mindless on Aural Films. A NYP release let loose on the 14th of Feb. 2026
Vast open sky at twilight, no horizon line, only infinite gradients of indigo and violet; beneath it, subtle field recordings of wind across empty plains merge with slow, formless tones that seem to erase the boundary between listener and sound.
A generous, healing expanse of drone crafted in tribute to World Sound Healing Day — pure, extended immersion without anchor or agenda.
That was Fabio Keiner & Jack Hertz — “Mindless.”
We continue with Gustavo Denouard and “Chimes in the Mist,” from the album Echoes of the Cosmos on Projekt Records. Dropped January 30th 2026.
Crystalline structures floating in deep space, faint luminous fog parting to reveal shimmering synth chimes that ripple outward like light through water, everything weightless, radiant, eternal.
Enchanting, luminous ambient electronics that evoke distant nebulae and quiet cosmic wonder.
That was Gustavo Denouard — “Chimes in the Mist.”
Shifting now to Yakuza Jacuzzi with “Wabi-Sabi,” from the album Wabi-Sabi on Cyclical Dreams which dropped on the 27th of February 2026.
An ancient garden after rain — cracked stone lantern, imperfect moss-covered branches, bass tones humming low like earth settling, harmonic shimmers appearing and dissolving like fleeting cherry blossoms in wind.
An immersive embrace of imperfection and transience, where cosmic drones and subtle instrumentation find beauty in the incomplete.
That was Yakuza Jacuzzi — “Wabi-Sabi.”
Next comes Mark Ellery Griffiths and “Colledig,” from the album Annwfn 2025, NYP self-released on March 1st 2026.
Shadowed Welsh valleys at twilight, mist clinging to ancient stones, deep drones rising from the earth like voices from the underworld, slow layers evoking loss and mythic depth.
Dark, resonant ambient that draws listeners into the mythic underworld with brooding, mythological weight.
That was Mark Ellery Griffiths — “Colledig.”
We move toward the close with Lingua Lustra and “Collosphaera,” from the album Sphaera 2005-2025, self-released on 24th of January 2026.
Spherical forms drifting through twenty years of sonic memory — glowing orbs of reworked and lost experiments, vast spherical atmospheres expanding and contracting like living celestial bodies.
This release is a sweeping retrospective journey through two decades of refined, expansive soundworlds — timeless and enveloping.
That was Lingua Lustra — “Collosphaera.”
And to carry us out… Rupert Lally with “Nord D” — Self released work titles Norden which dropped on the 6th of March 2026.
Stark Nordic landscape under pale winter light, modular synth lines tracing generative paths across frozen lakes, minimal pulses echoing like footsteps in snow, vast and unadorned.
Crisp, generative minimalism born from single-take modular explorations — quiet, precise, and profoundly spacious.
That was Rupert Lally — “Nord D.”
