Now imagine each episode as a colossal rotating stage — a great mechanical blooming lotus. You, the audience only ever glimpse a sliver of it at a time. Every artist is allotted the exact time it takes them to perform their piece. Then they rotate out of view, and the next act glides in. The stage spins at whatever speed the track demands.
The names of the artists and labels I’ll mention before each set — or “side,” as the cassette alchemists call them. Six little incantations per set, plus a general mist of what mood to expect.
Now the stage begins to turn.
A doorway that reboots itself, then a planet showing you the face it keeps away from the sun.
Side A coughs the portal awake, paints Milan limb by limb in grey-cheek library jazz, docks Ishtar’s goddess-ship, waits for Blue Bell Hill to switch from black-and-white to blossom, folds a desert peacock that rarely leaves the room, and hums a 7-inch bodega under fluorescent strip-light.
Side B parks godhead in the sprawl, waltzes a chest-pain name you cannot pronounce, pours top brass that refuses to complicate, walks the talk until it grows bass strings, holds the only hands that exist to be held, and ends on the dark side of the earth — the hemisphere the dying star never got around to lighting.
Overall mood: Playful, cinematic, and quietly cosmic — full of Clay Pipe colour, Batov half-shut eyes, and infrastructure filed under prayer. Perfect for late listening, bodega aisles after hours, or sitting with the drawbridge down while the next spool still waits.

A nostalgic, gently varied ambient journey through parting regrets, haunted cities, wildlife, and liquid illusions.
Side A moves from crackling farewells and spectral urban spaces into sunflowers, foxes, returning places, and soft confusion. Side B shifts through weird islands, mythical unicorns, brief summer echoes, transistor revolutions, distant horizons, and ends in liquid dreams.
Overall mood: Warm, reflective, and lightly mysterious — blending personal nostalgia with quiet wonder and soft experimental edges. Perfect for relaxed listening, late afternoons, or peaceful immersion.

On this episode you’ll hear Calgary, Alberta based Monroeville Music Center with a lovely nostalgic crackling piece from 2015 titled Parting Regrets from the name your price album Cave & Castle. Formerly available on cassette via Illuminated Paths.
Then Coventry, UK based artist Rich Johnson aka Visionary Lines sent me his latest haunted single The People’s City.
This will be followed by another UK based artist LoveKrafty and the also nostalgic track Sunflowers from the 2020 release Rainbow Drifter.
Then if I say Preston you’ll probably say Polypores. If you know Polypores then you’d probably not recognise this as being the same artist. I’ve chosen the track Foxes taken from his latest release Wildlife. It’s availabe on cassette through the Aural Canyon label.
After that we head to Italy and an artist who ended yesterdays episode Far away Nebraska with the drifting drone tones of a track titled It’s been a while since I’ve been here from the album Halfway from nowhere which is out on Seil Records sub-label Kordel Records.
Closing Side A is Tehran based Iranian artist Nahal Kavand and the lovely floating drones of the track Confusion from the album Echoes of a Fading Existence which is out on Lᴏɴᴛᴀɴᴏ Series which is the sub-label of rohs! records.

Welcome back, sonic travellers. Six tracks down. Six still waiting.
You’ll hear another artist I played yesterday. Italian artist Gino Fioravanti (Aglaia) with the longest entry in todays episode at 13:50 titled Unicorn from their latest release Altitudes which is out on legenday Projekt Records.
After that we’ll head to my present city of resedence Stockholm and an older one from 2012 by Martin Herterich’s alter ego Sand Circles and the final track from his album Motor City, it’s also the shortest piece of the episode at 1:10 titled Summer Echoes II.
Then we find ourselves in Southsea, UK based artist swimming lesson. Now this is a super duper exclusive from a collective of absolutly wonderful souls that I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for a few years now. They’ve gotten together to form The Synthesis Co-Operative and the first release is out on the 4th of September and will be available on cassette, Minidisc and digital and will be accompanied with a 40 page zine. Preorders from 14th August. This swimming lesson track, is stunning, and is called Transistor Revolution. Other names on this first release which will go by the name The Synthesis Co-Op Volume One will include The Earl of Dean, Legacy Systems, HDRF, Scholars of the Peak, theMLFs, Visionary Lines, Warmfield and more.
Near the end we’re joined by another Projekt Records release by Kyiv, Ukraine artist Bohdan Stupak and the moving track horizon from the equally moving album a place in memories.
Finally, Paris, France based artist Philippe Deschamps together with Nathaniel James Goldblatt aka The Goodnight Project and the drifting track Liquid Illusions from the four track EP Maps of an Invisible World.
But first, a wonderfully weird track by Mensa Group International titled Southern Mauristemo Islands from the 2012 Album Split LP which is split with luxury elite and was released on the Ailanthus Recordings label.

A groovy, cinematic, and eclectic journey blending indie folk introspection, global psychedelic funk, French electronic cool, post-rock elegance, and atmospheric psychedelia.
Side A cruises through cosmic weight, mechanical playfulness, and sun-drenched grooves. Side B percolates with jazzy structures, vaporous textures, and sleek professionalism before ending on a pointed, trippy note.

I’ve gone back to doing more podcast style episodes but I’ll do all the talking now in the intro as I’ve put a lot of love into making seamless segued mixes. There is just one break halfway through the episode to give the “virtual cassette” title a meaning. The shows are free for the first week and then go to my very few subscribers who get to enjoy the 260 episodes plus the 822 other shows whenever they like all for the price of… I actually don’t know what you can buy for 3 quid. It used to be a coffee.
This episode is inspired by the key of G minor and based on the amazing retro synth runs of “A Study In Vapors” by “Bluetech” from a release that’s in my top 5 of the year so far “Petite Constellations”.
Every tenth episode I do a best of show. So all these tracks have probably been featured by me over the years and have a special place, for me, in some way. On this episode you’ll be aurally pleasured by Berlin based legends To Rococo Rot with a track simply called “cars”. Originally released on the 1999 album “The Amateur View” which should be in everyone’s collection.
Naples based group Psyché grab our hips with “Cumbia Mahàre” from their debut Four Flies Records, self titled, 2023 release.
Then a trio that have infected me over the past few years, Khruangbin, here joined by the vocal stylings of Leon Bridges in the track “Chocolate Hills” from their 2022 EP Texas Moon.
After that Vincent Taeger aka Tiger Tigre together with, well, himself, in the track “Sport Mécanique” which takes me back to my childhood. My parents watch all sports on tv and this just puts me in that world of 80s sports jingles. It’s taken from the compilation album “ERR REC Library Vol.4 Physical Activity” from 2023.
Ending the A side is the Los Angeles, California based roots reggae infected Pachy García aka Pachyman and the track “Sunset Sound” from the album “The Return of…” released in 2021.
Starting off Side B with Vienna, Austria based synth maestro Dorian Concept and the track “Eigendynamik (Elevator Version)” from the 2020 album “The Jitters”.
Followed by my favourite Stockholm based artist of recent years Joel Danell better known as Sven Wunder. Here with the piece “Pop-Jazz Structures”. Every one of Joels tracks puts me in a happy space. This is from his 2023 album “Late Again”.
Then anyone who has followed the channel knows that I love odd time signatures and the track “Percolator” is in 5/8 and is by the one of a kind originals Stereolab. Taken from the 2025 album “Emperor Tomato Ketchup”.
This leads into the featured Seattle, Washington based, Evan Bartholomew, better known as, Bluetech track “A Study In Vapors”.
Then the penultimate piece for today comes in the form of one of my all time go to artists Air with the track “Les Professionnels” from their debut 1997 EP Premiers Symptômes.
Finishing us off is Salvia Plath aka RUN DMT with nostalgic samples over a hypnotic acoustic guitar line in the track “Money” from the 2009 album BONG VOYAGE.
But first, to set the vibe is New Zealand based folk tinged artist whose voice just grips me Aldous Harding with the song “Weight of the Planets” from her fantastic third album “Designer” from 2019.

An artists that has gone under the radar for years is the UK based Mark Ellery Griffiths. If you’re into vintage synths then dive into his vast name your price catalogue on Bandcamp. Mark gives us some brutalist electronica.
Another regular of the episodes is Rick Jones aka DARK FIDELITY HIFI with Orb flavoured Idm out on his sight and sound label. Also London based Rodrigo Passannantis’ latest I can’t seem to get enough of those soaring synth lines lately. From the Cyclical Dreams label.
Ivo Petrovs Mahorka label is almost always included. This time with quirky dub vibes from Mülheim, Germany based Record Of Tides.
The B side opens with the 27 minute track showing us what the Nord Modular G1 can do by Switzerland based Rupert Lally. This track would have made it onto an Expansive Waves episode but I’ve decided to discontinue those due to lack of motivation.
Clarinet based braindance from Berlin duo Meier & Erdmann.
Then Leeds based Ethiopian Jazz flavours from The Source on ATA records.

Greetings ye combers of the sound waves and welcome to the Virtual Cassette Library, episode 182. I’m Trevor and I’ll be gently guiding you through twenty artists and their musical endeavours tonight. If you’re new here, welcome; otherwise, welcome back.

This episode has set a new record for the channel: Six exclusive tracks at the time of recording. My handful of subscribers are some of the few souls on the planet who have heard these yet. How? I’ve started dropping music-only preview mixes of the shows before the chat version hits the air—that’s the secret handshake.
The exclusives come from Swimming Lesson, TOMC, The Metamorph, Martin Archer & Claire McAllister, Isograph (who is actually the same artist behind Swimming Lesson), and Oberlin. Who else joins the lineup? You’ll just have to settle in and listen.
Let’s ease into the flow.
We start the episode with the first exclusive which was actually released back in October on the Castles In Space Subscription Library so a few of you will know this one by Darryl Wakelin here as one of his alter egos *Swimming Lesson. This is A Penchant for Experiments from the album Home Electronics
Picture a dimly lit garage in a 1970s suburb, fairy lights strung across shelves of salvaged radios and half-built circuit boards, the faint glow of a soldering iron as tiny sparks dance like fireflies in the dusk.
And now the best thing that’s ever happened to this channel Mr. Gareth Evans aka HDRF. His support and above all his direct action on my request for sending in his story for the new show Chord Confessions. In fact the previous artist Swimming Lesson and other artists I’ve played are a direct result of Gareths passion and action in the community.
HDRF – Everybody Melts (for Miquette)

A slow dissolve of coloured wax under heat, pooling into soft iridescent shapes on a windowsill as afternoon light filters through rain-streaked glass, everything quietly surrendering to warmth.
Solar 76 – Arctan

Late golden hour on a coastal cliff path, the sun hanging low and casting long geometric shadows across concrete sea defences, waves below folding in perfect mathematical curves. A very different, yet familiar release from the label. Get your House moves on.
Now most of the music I play on the show is either NYP releases, or sent in by the artists or by the labels. This next track is the latter.

Open-top car cruising a winding island road at twilight, salt air rushing past, palm fronds silhouetted against a sky bleeding from azure to deep indigo, distant lights beginning to wink on.
Now another track from the outstanding and highly original label Cities and Memory.
Neil Foster – Yeyi (Central African Republic)
from the album A Century of Sounds. This track is from the NYP version on Bandcamp and one of the 100 pieces chosen for this 13 track release.
Dense rainforest canopy parting just enough for shafts of sunlight to hit moss-covered earth, the air thick with calls of unseen birds and the low rhythmic pulse of life moving unseen.
Gustavo Denouard – Whispers

Vast empty observatory dome at night, telescope lens reflecting a scattering of stars, faint cosmic radio static crackling like whispers from galaxies long ago.
Now another great friend of the show, Gavin Brick aka The Metamorph. This is the third exclusive for the episode. Gavin has received the physical CDs for his upcoming release From Cobalt to Aquamarine. I’ve always loved Gavin music and this sees a bit of a change in direction. It’s more introspective and is quickly becoming a favourite on repeat around the house. I believe this will be the first release from his new studio in Liverpool. Keep your eye on his Bandcamp page for the official release date.

Deep underwater cave lit only by bioluminescent streaks of electric blue, slow currents carrying flecks of mineral that catch the light like floating sapphires.

*Martin Archer & Claire McAllister – Underground
from the album Mast Year dropping on the Discus Music label on the 27th of March. There are loads of names to look forward to on this collage style release.
Dimly lit subway tunnel after hours, Claires floating improvised vocals and gentle jazz phrasings will take you underground.
Now let’s get industrial with some sub bass foundation. The penultimate track of this first half.
Wahn – A Place Slightly Wrong

Fog rolling across an abandoned industrial yard at dawn, rusted machinery half-submerged in mist, everything familiar yet shifted just a degree out of alignment.
We end the A side with Corvid One Cassette – REST
from the album Two on a label to keep you radar tuned to, Black Pylon. A Cassette label curated by Lee Pylon and Nicholas Langley.
A single raven perched on a cracked cassette tape case in an empty room, feathers ruffled by a draught from an open window, the world outside hushed.

We open this half with the living legend, Hainbach – BTM Blau
from the album Tagwerk on Spanish label, Industrial Complexx.
Analogue workbench at midnight, the Crumar DS-2, an early Italian synthesiser, pulsing gently as if the machine itself is dreaming.

from the whitelabrecs compilation masterpiece Shades
Welsh hillside at dusk, ancient stone wall curving into mist, wind carrying faint echoes of folk memory across heather and gorse.
Next I get to play one of my own pieces as no-one else will. In the intro, outro and scattered through each episode I create background soundscapes. When I’ve created 16 episodes I release them as an album. The three word titles of each piece are also geotags for spots on the planet that I have some sort of personal connection with. For example the title of this episode and the background you’re listening to now is situated.bike.guides which is the geographical location of the entrance to Omnipollos Church in Sundbyberg Stockholm. A Brewery and bar, creating some of the best craft beer on the planet. The title of this track is from the patch of grass outside my apartment. Now the fifth exclusive track from *Isograph – The Telling of the Bees
[same artist as Swimming Lesson, keeping traditions alive in sound]
Traditional beehive in a quiet garden at sunrise, bees humming in low golden light, keeper in veil gently lifting a frame, the hive whispering ancient secrets. This is from the first Isograph release which will see light of day later in the year. Here’s what Darryl told me about the track. “The telling of the bees is an old tradition from when lots of rural families kept a beehive for honey, propolis, etc. They would tell the bees about family news (births, deaths, etc.), which I think is just a beautiful thing to do, making the bees part of the family. The track is about all sides of that – the family news, and then at the scale of the bees hearing the news, and the whole thing is an attempt to reflect the lovely connection/regard for nature in this idea.” Cheer for that.
Now another artist I could probably contact for a coffee if I ever was in Edinburgh. Exit Chamber – We Can Get There Simply By Surviving (Previously Unreleased)
from the album The Passed Year 2025 on a global collective of artists known as Passed Recordings. The Bandcamp page says they’re based in Uppsala Sweden but I haven’t figured out what the connection is. Anyway,
Cracked pavement after rain, small green shoot pushing through concrete, resilient and quiet, the city noise fading into a hopeful hush.
Next described as being constructed to elicit feelings of calm, to unearth hazy memories of early innocence, and to lure the chaotic mind into the woods of sleep.

Good day, listeners… or should I say, travellers of the tape.
Trevor here. You’ve pressed play on another Virtual Cassette Library. Twelve-track virtual cassettes that flips themselves at the halfway mark.

The shows remain free for the first week, then slip quietly into the hands of my Mixcloud subscribers, who currently have over eleven hundred other episodes waiting for them whenever the mood strikes. Subscribers also receive the expanding series of 3-hour adventures titled Veil Frequencies.
Now imagine each episode as a colossal rotating stage — a great mechanical blooming lotus. You, the audience only ever glimpse a sliver of it at a time. Every artist is allotted the exact time it takes them to perform their piece. Then they rotate out of view, and the next act glides in. The stage spins at whatever speed the track demands.
The names of the artists and labels I’ll mention before each set — or “side,” as the cassette alchemists call them. Six little incantations per set, plus a general mist of what mood to expect.
Now the stage begins to turn.
A luminous, slightly forensic ambient journey through corridors of evidence, papery lanterns, and planets that have not finished burning.
Side A opens an investigation the cameras invent as they roll, then cracks a cosmic oval, grows emerald armour between patio bricks, combs strings into sand that will not stay, squeezes two minutes of smear-test whimsy, and ends on a wind prayer written for people and cats.
Side B walks dry iron valleys toward utopian lullabies, cuts others from the seventh gemstone tray, argues a Messiah into demo clothes, wires splendour so slowly it can curve, refuses to hurry its illusions, and keeps Batov’s ten-year sun turning with all it can do.
Overall mood: Contemplative, analog, and quietly jewelled — full of evidence the ghost leaves behind, sand still deciding, and light that knows which pocket it came from. Perfect for late listening, slow wiring, or sitting with the corridor while the next spool still waits.
