Virtual mixtape radio for the sonically adventurous. 20 artists. Drops about three times a week. No schedule, just a passion for independent music.

Good evening, or morning, or whatever sliver of the clock you’ve managed to carve out for yourself. This is Trev’s Virtual Cassette Library, episode 176. I’m your guide, Trevor.

The cassette sits ready in the deck, labels hand-scribbled, oxide already flaking a bit at the edges. Side A and Side B, twenty artists strung across them like beads on a frayed string. We’ll flip the tape halfway through, that satisfying clunk and hiss, because some things refuse to be digital.

Tonight we drift through ambient drifts, kosmische pulses, drone meditations, a touch of library funk, some psychedelic sprawl, electroacoustic murmurs from places like Bulgaria, the UK, Munich, Buenos Aires, Athens, Rome, Sheffield, Colorado, and a few others that don’t fit neatly on any map. The longest track stretches out patiently, Asha Patera’s – Wandering in the Upside Down from Sounds for the Soul Records, clocking in at just over 11 minutes. Durations aside, none hurry. There’s an exclusive track which open the B side from Moscow artist DEE_KAY and his track Bellcut. But we’ll get to all that in a bit.
Headphones on if you’ve got them. Volume where it feels intimate. Let the kettle whistle if it wants to. The world can wait.

We begin with a January release from the Mahorka label in Bulgaria, a collected volume of drone and teknoiz spanning a decade. Autonomаton offers The UFO project remix—eerie, floating synth washes that suggest something observed from a great height, unhurried and slightly unsettling in the best way. Next, Mark Ellery Griffiths with Synthi Sequence B. Loops and sequences built on vintage synths, patient repetitions that build quiet architectures. Mark is a regular of my shows and doesn’t get the credit he should. Check out his Bandcamp releases. He’s nudging on 50 and they’re name your price. Synthi Loops Sequences 2025 – Self released back in December.

Danielle Nia now, Longing For Togetherness. Warm, enveloping tones from i u we records, a gentle pull toward connection without ever forcing the issue. Stunning patchwork from the great Connected 3 compilation. Released a couple of weeks back on i u we records.

Greek artist Substak and his track Apartment Window from Belgian ambient label Daydreamers. A quick view onto quiet streets, field recordings woven into subtle rhythms, the sound of somewhere lived-in and watched over time. From the EP Empty Bench – released not two weeks ago.

A good friend of the channel Asha Patera, Wandering in the Upside Down. Dream-logic drifts and inverted atmospheres from Sounds for the Soul Records, like walking through familiar rooms that have rearranged themselves while you slept. The Vale of Shadows – Sounds for the Soul. Which is a Stranger Things inspired ambient compilation. Also released in January. This is the long haul.

Asha Patera – Wandering in the Upside Down.

Belgian artist Jeroen Lauwers is, Red Stars Over Tokyo with In Trance from self released The Burning Spiral. Pulsing, hypnotic acid tinged layers that suggest endless night drives through neon-lit cities that might not exist. The Burning Spiral. released back in December.

Southend On Sea artist Adrian Lane, After The Deluge. Post-flood calm, piano and strings emerging from residue, reflective, haunted and sparse. Their Ghosts and Ours – out on Sheffields finest Audiobulb.

Argentinian artist Puppy Bordiga with mRn, Solarium. Collaborative warmth, sunlit electronics and gentle percussion from Walking the Way III. Self released back in November.

ATA Records is a label and I can’t get my head around if they are also a band. They really know their library stuff but on this release and others the artist is simply ATA Records, no credits to the artists which is a shame. Anyway This is Tatsuya, The Sword. Library archive material, cinematic and evocative, with a heartfelt flute. drawn from Vol 4. The Library Archive Vol 4 – ATA Records.

Now from one of the best Italian jazz-funk library albums of the ’70s. Oscar Rocchi’s Genziana. Herbal, pastoral electronics evoking wild flowers and Italian hillsides, from Erbe Selvatiche on Four Flies Vaults which is the digital imprint of Four Flies Records.

Today’s theme is Obey Beams Starting—which, as usual, is both the track you’re hearing underneath and a location you can find on a map, if you’re the sort who enjoys chasing coordinates on What3Words.

Karesansui means “dry landscape” or “dry mountain water” and refers to a minimalist style of Japanese garden that uses rocks, gravel, and sand to represent natural landscapes like mountains, islands, and rivers without any water. These gardens, often found in Zen Buddhist temples, are designed for contemplation and meditation, symbolizing natural elements through careful arrangement and raked gravel patterns that mimic water. Karesansui is from the upcoming album Techno Feudal which drops December 12 on Machine Records.

The A side contains “On The Waves Of Neptune” an exclusive from the album “Where Trees Go To Die” the latest offering from Stone Anthem, a hallucinatory journey through ambient textures, dense organic drones, and otherworldly frequencies. Layering field recordings, modular synthesis, and hushed vocals, the album was created in an attempt to maximise immersion and create a sonic field of bliss, a slow-evolving soundscape where perception bends and time dissolves. The album’s initial blueprint was created in a quiet hamlet in the Spanish mountains in 2023 with very little equipment. So the scenery of forests and mountains were a great influence on the album’s development. This is also from where all of the field recordings on the album were sourced.

Castles in Space is delighted to be working with this charismatic, vibrant and super-talented young artist. He’s just turned 18.

The B side contains an exclusive by colab who I know nothing about and I don’t believe are the Georgian Hard techno outfit. The track here, Troubled appears on the Bricolage labels 27 track compilation album X celebrating their 10th year of magical releases. It’s a ‘who’s who’ of the label past, present and future. The album is not due for release until october 2. This single will be officially released on September 18, but you non subscribers can hear it here until the 23 august. The album, Umbral, inhabits that in-between space, that threshold: where what we feel and what we do don’t fully align, where what once felt steady begins to tremble. The release will be accompanied by an 8-part film, with each chapter conceptually interpreting one of the album’s tracks. Together, all eight chapters form a visual entity that shares the name Umbral. The film is directed by filmmaker and artist Héctor Ayuso.

Born in the mist forests of Valle de Bravo, Mexico, this track mourns the loss of fireflies, birds, crickets, and the endangered Abronias—small, dragon-like reptiles now on the red list. This episode includes 3 exclusive tracks that you’ll probably only hear here before they are officially released. The A side opens with a descent beneath the surface—into fractured ground and emotional resonance. From Newcastle’s electronic frontier, Bartholomew brings us “Land Fracture”, a track from his forthcoming album Subterranea, releasing July 25th via Castles In Space very own Lunar Module.
Crafted by composer Chris Bartholomew, whose theatrical credits include the Barbican and National Theatre Studio, this piece fuses cinematic storytelling with generative electronics, orchestral textures, and raw sonic abrasion. It’s a meditation on instability—both geological and emotional.
🌀 “Land Fracture” feels like a fault line rendered in sound. Granular textures crackle beneath sweeping harmonic arcs. There’s tension, but also grace. Think Hans Zimmer’s emotional weight, Tim Hecker’s digital erosion, and Ben Frost’s stark minimalism—all refracted through Bartholomew’s unique lens.
The album Subterranea was born after a shared bill with Gordon Chapman-Fox of Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan. That performance led to this release on Lunar Module, and it’s already drawing praise from sonic visionaries like Leafcutter John, who described the album as:
“Cryogenically frozen Beach Boys slowly melting from the Earth’s final great glacier.”
🎧 “Land Fracture” is just one of eight tracks that explore resilience, collapse, and the beauty found in broken structures. The full album drops July 25th on CD and digital. If you’re near Newcastle, don’t miss the launch party at The Globe on July 24th.

Also on the A side a moment of return, of memory, of warmth wrapped in stillness. This exclusive preview comes from the upcoming album Aunque llegue la mañana by Spanish duo Raúl Cantizano and David Cordero, featuring the haunting voice of Lela Soto.
The track is titled “Algo a lo que regresar”—something to return to—and it lives up to its name. It’s a quiet invocation of place and feeling, where Cantizano’s flamenco guitar gently converses with Cordero’s ambient textures. The result is a soundscape that feels both rooted and weightless, like a memory suspended in golden light.
🌀 Lela Soto’s voice drifts in like a breeze through an open window—fragile, soulful, and timeless. Her presence adds a spectral warmth to the minimalist arrangement, grounding the electronics in something deeply human.
